An Kindness of People We Don't Know: The Way a Gentleman I Only Just Encountered Assisted Me Obtain the Position That Altered My Path

During the late 1980s, I was embarking on a budget travel adventure to Europe with a travel partner. Since my companion was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in NYC, we had planned a two-week stay there en route to London.

We arrived at the student accommodation, a sizeable ten-floor structure on the UWS named International House. After dropping our bags, we went directly to the canteen, where we grabbed food, found a table, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at a prestigious New York university. He wanted to know what I did, and I told him that I had newly finished with a scientific background and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He noted that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – adjacent to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I should apply for a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, telling him that I was heading off to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.

A day later I toured the city, returning to the canteen that after dark. The engineering student walked over to me and informed me that he had set up a meeting for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Given that he had made the arrangement, I went to the meeting – but straight off told my interviewer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

In typical New York fashion – a place where opportunities abound – she said: “We'll handle it. How soon can you begin?” I never got on that flight to London.

I held that position for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I also received complimentary education at Columbia, and I took advantage to complete a graduate degree in global studies.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his full name, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the confidence or self-assurance to reach out at an prestigious college and ask for a job. Moreover, I had consistently hoped to study abroad, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that tuition waiver.

What's more, that role at the university resulted in a position in Switzerland where I encountered my beautiful French husband, with whom I now have a family of four kids. It was a total sliding doors moment. That kind stranger redirected my path in life, and I’m forever grateful.
