No fewer than thirteen passengers perish and 98 injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” declared the country's president.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term finished the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, defying predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party called for an immediate pause in the development and management of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been running in full accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these national projects.
