Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People buying such drugs need to be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally have a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the injections explains the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It was like something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Interest

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
