Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships this year.

Competitors will gain the option to contest specific decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
